Although God Modding is generally associated with novice roleplayers and this is a board for intermediate or higher users, it still can rear its ugly head in particularly competitive or "intense" threads. Therefore, I think it's important to address god modding and how it may apply in our particular situation.
What God Modding Is
God Modding is the neglect of human limitation or the over usage of extraordinary ability in a manner that is exuberant or unfair to other players.
Types of God Modes: Character Based God Modes
When writing up a character, it's very important to include strengths AND weaknesses. A character without flaws isn't going to be interesting to roleplay anyway. A character should also be fairly balanced between the strengths and weaknesses, although in character this might not be apparent (for instance, a very charismatic rich man might seem like he has everything in character but behind closed doors he is a coward and addicted to alcohol). Although weaknesses do not have to be expressed all of the time in a way that is apparent to the characters of other players, they should ALWAYS be addressed in the 'Personality' section of your character's application. That being said, this section of god modding is mostly here for those who are applying to the site because characters without developed weaknesses will not be allowed on to the roleplaying boards.
Types of God Modes: Neglect of Human Limitation
Humans experience important things like fatigue and pain. If a character has been running a long time, is engaged in a long battle or is otherwise exerting themselves physically he or she needs to act like it! Remember that the more physical strain some one is under, the slower and sloppier they tend to be. Obviously the Assassins and Templars have been trained to pull through fatigue as best they can but everyone has limits - including your character. Make sure you have what those limits are defined ahead of time so that when you enter battle with another character you have a good idea of when your character would either faint, surrender or retreat.
Types of God Modes: Endless Dodging
Your character has to take a hit once in a while. While playing the actual game 'Assassin's Creed 2', there are rarely any times where Ezio manages to pull off a long battle without taking single hit. Your character can't do that either. A good roleplayer is a good judge of when and when to not take a hit. They usually have the story's interest and heart rather than their own character's. If you're unsure of whether or not you'll be a good judge, plan the battle out ahead of time with the other people involved. Make sure you know the ultimate outcome of the battle before you actually go to write it out and you'll be fine.
Types of God Modes: Outside Knowledge
Your character doesn't necessarily have the same knowledge that you do as a person who gets to read everyone's profiles and other boards your character wasn't a part of. You need to take extreme care to make sure that the knowledge your character uses while in play is knowledge that he or she has obtained and not something you happened to read. It's not possible for your character to know everything that you know.
Types of God Modes: 'Jack of All Trades Syndrome'
Your character cannot be good at everything or have the interest and time for every hobby in existence. Your character can't possibly be prepared for every scenario out there. Pick a few that are within their personality to pursue, along with a couple of strong hobbies that they take very seriously for a well-rounded character.
Types of God Modes: 'The Ultimate Expert'
If your character is an 'expert' at something (for instance, fencing) that doesn't make him automatically able to go up against something of another weapons class or an expert of all weapons and fighting styles. It would be highly unlikely that anyone from Europe would have any knowledge of Eastern fighting styles, for example. Also, an expert at fencing would have a hard time going up against some one with a scimitar. Remember that each weapon and skill set has its positives and negatives and that no singular one has the ability to easily prevail over all others.
Types of God Modes: 'Impervious Castle Defense'
All forts, battlements and anywhere that is defensible during a large scale battle has to have "holes" in its defense. There is no such thing as a place that is 100% secure.
When God Modding Occurs
The first important thing to realize is that godmodding can happen completely accidentally. A person who god modes is not necessarily trying to one-up you, control you, or otherwise threaten you or your character. If you believe that some one may have god modded, let them know politely and point out where you think the actual god mode took place. Yelling, threatening and even running off to the mods is not always the best way to solve the problem. After all, why get a third party involved if the other person would otherwise simply recognize their mistake and edit their post?
Of course, it isn't always going to be that easy. A disagreement can sometimes occur. Again, it's important to remain as polite as possible no matter how angry or upset you are. Remember, we are all adults here (literally). If you cannot find a solution to the argument that both parties are happy with, this is the time to contact a moderator.
When a Mod/Admin Rules That God Modding Has Occurred
When a Moderator rules that god modding has occurred, the offender will be asked to edit their post. If the offender edits, the problem is solved and no punishments will be given out. If the offender rudely responds to the moderator, the offender will be punished as according to the rules of the site. If the offender wishes to contest the ruling and is polite about it, an administrator will be called in to make a final judgement. The judgement of the administrator is final. if editing is required and the offender refuses to do so, the offender will be punished as according to the rules.
If you have any further questions about god modding, please ask in the questions and suggestions board.
